Gush, Part Deux: If there was one piece I was really hoping - TopicsExpress

Gush, Part Deux: If there was one piece I was really hoping would be honored today, it was Controlling Interests. Not just because it is a genuinely funny piece (but it is -- who doesnt love a scene where middle schoolers play eight year-olds who discuss the merits of nose picking, whether there is value in liking girls, and where babies come from?) but, more importantly, because it featured six eighth graders whove performed together since fourth grade. To see the six of them on stage, being kids with one another -- it was just right. Alexa, Alex, Kenny, Tyler, Charles and Jack -- youll forever be remembered together at Corbett Prep for moments just like this. Six amazingly awesome kids, doing their thing, together on stage. Youll all go on to great things in the years ahead, no doubt -- and well get to proudly say that this is where you came from. Youve made us proud. My heart broke for one quick moment this afternoon. When Will found out that All the Men in My Life Have Been Killed By Candarian Demons won Alternate Critics Choice, I saw a tear form in his eye. You must know that Will is a pretty emotional kid (I cant imagine where he gets that...) and he is also super-hyper-uber competitive. They won Alternate Critics Choice -- an honor most kids would kill for.... but it meant they were not going to perform at the evening Showcase. Will already knew his other two pieces had not been selected either (although Two by Two was also an Alternate) and I knew....I knew what was going through his head. We had a talk about it -- to him, if you dont win, you must not have done enough. And he, as he does a lot, blamed himself. By the time we were done, he was feeling better (I think?) but this I promise you -- look out world. Will is intent of being on that stage. And soon. And he rarely misses his target. Youve been warned. These next couple years are going to be intense. Last thing -- I have to again mention our wonderful, incredible, awesome Thespian sponsors -- Seth Travaglino, Barbara McColley McBride, Michael J Vokoun, and Jeanie Rivera. These people sacrifice their time so our kids can be so amazingly prepared for events like this. Its a year round project -- looking for new pieces every year, auditioning kids, rehearsing new music, new choreography, new blocking -- over and over and over and over... giving our kids as much time as they possibly can so they can shine on stages like this. And our kids did shine. To the four of you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Your work resulted in such joy for our kids (and their parents) today. Youll forever have my gratitude.
