Guyanese on Trinidad’s national swim team AUGUST 4, 2013 | BY CHRIS | FILED UNDER SPORTS - Delroy Tyrrell continues to make big splash Trinidad and Tobago-based Guyanese, Delroy Tyrrell continued to make big splashes with exceptional performances that landed him on the Twin Island Republic’s National Swim Team that will compete at a Goodwill meet, August 16-18, in Barbados. Close to two years ago, Tyrrell had joined one of Trinidad’s premier clubs, Tidal Wave Aquatics under the astute leadership of Hazel and Chabeth Haynes. His father, Pastor Fitzroy Tyrrell, said that at the time he only knew to swim freestyle. “He never completed the ‘learn to swim’ programme he was enrolled at the Centre of Excellence,” Tyrrell said, adding that the Haynes worked tirelessly with his son, which aided in his rapid ascendency in the sport. His schedule followed a rigorous twice per day, six days per week training session with physical exercises for one hour in the evening. Tyrrell is an example of the maxim “what you put in you get out” with his disciplined work ethics. After nine months of intense training, he placed first at the East Central National Primary School Swim Meet in the Non-Competitive 9-10 age category. Following that performance, it was then decided that he needs to compete competitively. Last year he competed in National Age Group Short Course Championships and though he did not make the team then, he placed fifth and won many admirers. Tyrrell vowed to himself that he will make the team for 2013 Goodwill Swim Meet. He consistently placed third at all the major swim meets this year then at the 2013 National Age Group Short Course Championships held during July 11-14 at the St. Michael’s Pool in San Fernando, he achieved his goal when he placed second overall and will represent Trinidad and Tobago in Barbados next weekend. In the 9-10 age categories, he competed in ten events, and placed second in six of those events and third in the others. “I can say that swimming is time consuming and costly. We have had to rearrange our lives to accommodate Delroy’s training,” Pastor Tyrrell said. “Even our trips oversees includes going to the pool everyday. But we are very proud of him and we will support him 100%,” he continued, giving thanks to Almighty God for his son’s glorious ascendancy in swimming and his accomplishments.
