Guys? I love you and I have a problem. Here it is. You were born. Thats wonderful. You were born on a date. Thats wonderful. But it means you have a birthday. I know more than 365 of you. You see where Im going here. I feel like I am saying “happy birthday” as often as I say “the.” You know how you can say a word till it has no meaning? Sky sky sky sky sky sky sky sky sky. I’m feeling like that about “happy birthday.” And worse, far worse, is the daily dose of guilt and anxiety when I say it belatedly, or miss the whole thing. I was trying to wait for a day that wasn’t anybody’s birthday to get into this. But there was no such day. So I’d like to say Happy 2014 Birthday, everybody, and I’m really, seriously glad you were born, and I truly hope you will have/have had a wonderful birthday and we’ll do this again next year. ps If you are a child, that’s different, or if you’re someone who has a real attachment to the birthday, that’s different and I will try harder.
