Guys, the NSC Velcodrome is on the verge of being shut down. Please share this info and reach out to James Tainter and see how we can help with the large voice here! From James: Folks – as you may or may not know, our velodrome’s head is on the chopping block. It’s in need of some repairs – which, if they don’t happen, the NSC is merely going to lock the gate and close it down for 2015. They had an engineering firm out there and their report said it was “unsafe”, which is not true, but since it’s on record now, there is a liability factor that they are using to strengthen their fight to shut it down. They were given the keys to a Ferrari 25 years ago and drove the shit out of it, never changed the oil or had it tuned up, and now they are scratching their heads and all bent out of shape that they need to spend some money on some new tires and a tune up. They have the money. They just don’t see the value in keeping it operating (doesn’t generate revenue, limited user base, etc.). It’s the only track of its kind in the northern hemisphere and one of the best (still) in the country. A small advocacy group has been formed and they are conducting a meeting next week to share all details pertaining to this situation as well as answer any questions you may have. I’m not asking you to attend (if you want, that would great!) but I am asking that you distribute this information to your network of people who care about bicycles. I know some of you roll with some heavy hitters in the industry (and some of you ARE heavy hitters in the industry). Please share with them. I want you to know that this is far from a selfish request, this isn’t about me at all. I’ve had my time and have made my memories on those boards, I’m done. But I look at our crew of juniors (and we have some very promising ones that work their butts off) and others who have just started or are new to it - as well as those yet to discover it - and I feel for them if this won’t be around for them to make their own memories on. Maybe if we can come up with a loud enough communal voice from our community, the NSC will have to listen. Below is information pertaining to time/date and tentative agenda. Please spread the word. Thank you James Friends of Velodrome Racing in Minnesota is working with the NSC Foundation to ensure ongoing investment in the NSC Velodrome. Come to this informal, open meeting to see whos involved, whats happening, and to find out ways to contribute to this effort. Tentative Agenda: 1. Who is the advocacy group? 2. What weve been doing with the NSC (meeting with their subcommittee) 3. State of NSCs considerations of the Velodrome (their concerns) 4. What were trying to do (repair, cost-sharing, agreement with NSC) 5. Fundraising Jason Lardy will also be in attendance to present information on where is MN Cycling Center velodrome project is. Location: Macalester College in St Paul Carnegie Hall, Room 404 7-9PM Carnegie is the 2nd large building south of Grand on Macalester Street. There is a door on the street side and on the quadrangle side. macalester.edu/about/maps/ #25 on this map
