Guys, the whole point of mental illness is that it trumps all other forms of bad behavior. If someone is completely delusional, they cant really be ___, they are too busy being delusional. Elliot Rodger may have been whatever you want to call him, but most importantly he was extremely mentally ill and suffering. In perfect hindsight, he was not being properly treated. If we as a society acknowledged that we should be working to reduce everyones suffering, we could have guns on every flat surface. Its interesting how we attribute people ignoring mental illness to the wealth of those who suffer just as readily as we attribute it to the poverty of those who suffer. I hope in a hundred years, these tragedies of confused agency can be appreciated for what they are and the few of us who acknowledge them as such are seen as trying to help, since thats not how we are thought of now. (this is a long and slightly confusing sentence... sorry about that.) We intuitively shy away from the others suffering. If the people in this persons life had put forward the best effort imaginable with the knowledge and wisdom available today, all 7 of these people would still be alive. It has nothing to do with guns or misogyny and everything to do with minimizing the suffering of the animal sitting next to you so they dont lash out and kill you. Its really that simple.
