Günaydın sevgili Enginpolis. 10 yaşındaki kızımla bir Türk filmi seyrederken gurbet kelimesini duyunca bana “Gurbet ne demek anne?” diye sordu. “Doğup büyüdüğün yerden uzakta başka bir yer aşkım; başka kasaba, şehir ve hatta ülke olabilir” dedim. “Sen gurbette misin?” dedi. “Gurbette miyim” diye düşündüm. Şu bir gerçek ki hiçbir zaman buraya aitmişim gibi hissetmedim. Kayahan’ın da bir şarkısında dediği gibi sesler yabancı yüzler yabancı, üstünde uçan kuşlar yabancı. “Gurbetteyim aşkım” dedim. Aslında gurbet kelimesi o kadar duygu yüklü bir kelime ki. Ayrılan için geride kalan sevdiklerine, mahallesine, köyüne, şehrine, ülkesine, kültürüne hissedilen büyük bir özlemi ve orada yaşanan hatıraları, o an için yaşadığı yabancı ülkede ne kadar uzun yıllar yaşarsa yaşasın hissettiği yabancılığı, geride kalan içinse uzaklara gönderilen kişiye duyulan özlemi, sevgiyi ve anında ulaşabilmenin ya da yardım edebilmenin imkansızlığını anlatıyor. Belki teknoloji uzak mesafeleri birbirine yakınlaştırmadan önce bu kelime daha şiddetli duygular hissettiriyordu bilemiyorum. When my 10 years old daughter heard the word ‘gurbet’ while watching a Turkish movie, she asked “What does it mean, mom?” I told her “It means a foreign place far from where you were born and raised, my love. It may be a town, a city, or even a country.” She asked “Are you in gurbet?” I thought whether I was in gurbet. To be honest, I’ve never felt like I belong to where I currently live now. As Kayahan told in one of his songs: “Sounds are foreign, faces are foreign, even birds flying over you are foreign. “I am in gurbet, my love,” I said. Actually, when I think about it, “gurbet” is not a simple word. It is a word full of emotions. For people who left their home, it means huge longing for their loved ones, town, city, country, and culture, their memories there, and outsiderness they feel no matter how long they have been living in a foreign place. For people who send their loved ones to a foreign place, it means their longing for those people and their feeling of not being able to immediately support or reach them when needed. Maybe, this word had stronger feelings and emotions before the technology made even the farthest places closer. Hugging with happiness, may foreign land birds come back soon. This was our ordeal and destiny. The fate was cursed for its cruelty. For a little bit of love, foreign land birds were crushed.
