H&M Tech. Brakes for early Grand National Galaxies. Wags have said that early NASCAR cars did not stop; they just slowed. And thats probably closer to the truth than one would like. Drum brakes were the industry standard in the early 1960s. Superspedway cars normally ran 3 x 11 drums at the bow and 2.5 x 11 at the stern. Short track ccars and those that ran Riverside upped the front drum size to 3.5 x 11. The bigger drums and shoes evolved from the Lincoln line I am told. They are today unobtanium. The smaller drums and shoes were regular street cars stuff. Big block cars, Taxis, station wagons and cop cars carried 3 drums and just about every thing carried 2 or 2.5 drums. Special fully metallic pad materila was the norm by the mid sixties. Teams also regularly swiss cheesed backing plates for cooling. Single reservois master cylinders were the norm and front to back proportioning was achieved by using different sizes of wheel cylinders.
