H-U-C-K METHOD™ Hook, Understand, Clarify, Kicker Harry Hurt III is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College, a best selling author, an award winning print and video journalist, and a former New York Times columnist. Born in Houston, Texas, he graduated cum laude from The Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut. Harry has been a senior editor at Texas Monthly, a correspondent at Newsweek, and the executive editor of Travel + Leisure Golf. His articles have appeared in Esquire, Fortune, Sports Illustrated, Town & Country, Self, and numerous other national publications. Harry’s approach to teaching writing is inspired by his experiences as a professional journalist who is continually learning new things ranging from flying World War II vintage airplanes to dancing with the New York City Ballet. Along with encouraging students to mine compelling content from their own personal experiences, he emphasizes the importance of structuring written communications in accordance with story telling forms that date to Aristotle and building blocks based on professional journalism techniques he has used for over forty years. One of them is his patented H-U-C-K (as in Huck Finn) method, an acronym that stands for Hook, Understand, Clarify, Kicker. This simple but highly effective approach can be used in college essays and course work, as well as in oral presentations of almost any type. Harry is currently tutoring New York metropolitan and Long Island area students aged 14 to 18 in person and via FaceTime and Skype. His instruction includes composing college essays for the common application, supplemental essays required by various colleges, SAT and ACT essays and applications for study abroad. Along with learning how to “catch the fish” represented by specific essay requirements, students learn the techniques needed to make them expert “fishermen and fisherwomen” in virtually any writing endeavor. Harry is also providing general tutoring in high school level English and history classes, and coaching the production of oral and video presentations.
