HA-LING-JI: the World Heritage Hanlin (Halingyi) is a village near Shwebo in the Sagaing Division. It was a significant city in Pyu era. The earliest artifacts of Halin—citys wooden gates—are radiocarbon dated to 70 CE. Brick walled city was rectangular with curved corners, approximately 3.2 km long on the north-south axis and 1.6 km on the east-west. At 664 hectares, the city was nearly twice the size of Beikthano. There are 4 main gates at the cardinal points, and a total of 12 gates, based on the zodiac. A canal is flowing across the city and trace of a water reservoir (Naga-Yone Kan) at South-East corner of the city. Archaeologists found structures, potteries, coins and other artifacts and also the Halins Pyu script, which to be the earliest writing in the Pyu realm (and in Myanmar) based on an earlier version of the Brahmi script (Mauryan and Guptan). Inscriptions at Sri Ksetra showed a later version of same script. Known for the production of land salt, a highly prized commodity since the prehistoric time, Hanlin had successive habitation during Stone Age, early Bronze Age, Bronze-Iron age and then developed as a Pyu city state. Its various archaeological evidences included Bronze Age, and Bronze-Iron age necropolis with in-situ skeletons whose layer of depth, instruments and ornaments buried along, indicated their antiquity. The modest village is also noted for its hot springs. Ancient city Hanlin (Ha-Ling-Ji) entered into the World Heritage List on 22nd June 2014 and ceremony of inauguration was held on 10th December 2014.
