HABITAT IMROVEMENT PROJECT - Jim Foote Chapter of RGS In the early spring of this year Frank Goethals and other members of the Jim Foote RGS chapter near Gaylord, MI contacted the MI DNR to offer assistance with managing a wildlife opening on state property near Frederic. The Chapter used money raised during their events to buy seed and fertilizer to restore a large state land wildlife opening. They then borrowed farm equipment to till and plant the opening with species beneficial to ruffed grouse and other wildlife. Brian Piccolo, Wildlife Biologist with the MI DNR stated that “we (MI DNR) are in the process of restoring many of our designated wildlife openings. One way we’re doing more work is through strong partnerships with groups such as RGS. As we restore and establish new openings in the region, we look forward to working closely with partners such as RGS who have the same habitat improvement goals that we do.” Future plans for the area and surrounding sections of state land include the planting of native trees and shrubs beneficial to wildlife and additional restoration of old wildlife openings. ruffedgrousesociety.org
