HAIL QUEEN LUPITA! Peeps, I did not post about this remarkable being because I was grieving my uncle OLIVER KUWANA who passed away on 28 February. He was a great man who has left a wonderful legacy for Zimbabwe in many silent but far reaching works. Two greats, one of the old school and one of the new. How wonderful for Africa. Thank you, God. It is a great time to be African and be able to do such works. I will look back on Sekuru Oliver Kuwanas life another time. I have to digest all the meanings of the lessons I learnt from that great man. I can safely say that without him, I would most likely have passed away three decades ago. In any event my life would not have been as it is now. Let me turn, in this moment of celebrating my uncles life, to Queen Lupita. There are a great many remarkable things about Queen Lupita and the script of 12 YEARS. It gives African women our voice. It allows us to share our pain and retain our dignity. We can desire to be clean and beautiful. We can decide who to give what to, we can object when white women bash us. With grace and dignity. We are no longer spectacle. The spectacle is those who inflict horrors and unspeakables on us. We can be treated with grace, when those we wish to repay in the only currency we have refuse that payment from their own graciousness. We have the graciousness not only to take but also to give. Queen Lupitas interpretation of such realities has availed them to all of us. Hail Queen Lupita, the creators of the film and the man himself who told his story.
