HAMMS OF GALLIA COUNTY - - - Frank and Susan Hamm lived near the small hamlet of Adamsville, which is in Raccoon Township, Gallia County, Ohio. They were parents of three sons, Jenkins Davis Hamm, Joseph Hamm, and Maurice Marine Hamm. Jenkins was born April 3, 1892, Joseph was born June 15, 1902, and Maurice Marine was born October 5, 1914. In the summer of 1920, Jenkins Davis Hamm married Mattie A. McKean, daughter of William McKean and Susan Pritchard. Mattie had been born June 30, 1890, in Raccoon Township. In September, 1920, Jenkins and Mattie came north to Wood County, taking up residence in a house on the first street south of the railroad in Bloomdale. That street is now known as Hamm Street, but the house is no longer standing. Jenkins went to work for the B&O Railroad as a section hand, and in 1921, he and Mattie became parents of a son, Charles Clyde Hamm. Clyde Hamm grew up on Hamm Street, attended school in Bloomdale, and later graduated from Bloomdale High School with the class of 1940. Jenkins Davis Hamm died in 1939, after a long illness, and was buried at Weaver Cemetery, near Bairdstown. Joseph Hamm came to Bloomdale in the early spring of 1939, just prior to his brothers death, and stayed with Mattie and Clyde for a short time until after Jenkins death. Joseph Hamm returned to Gallia County, and married Myrtle Pauline Ashburn, daughter of Bert and Myrtle Ashburn. Pauline had been born across the Ohio River on December 19, 1914, at Weston, West Virginia. A week after they were married, Joe brought Pauline to Bloomdale, and after Joe got on the B&O section gang, they moved into their own home on the east side of Maple Street. Maurice Marine Hamm grew up in Gallia County, graduated from school at Rio Grande, and later graduated from Rio Grande College. He also came to Bloomdale just prior to the death of his brother Jenkins, and he found work at the Bersted in Fostoria. In the fall of 1939, Maurice Marine Hamm married Clara E. Baird at the village of Portage, Ohio. Clara had been born March 12, 1914, to Isaac W. Baird, Sr. and Chloe Ellen Brooks of Bloomdale. Shortly after their marriage, Marine and Clara moved into their own home on the west side of Maple Street, directly across the street from Joe and Pauline. War came to the United States, and on June 4, 1942, Marine and his nephew Clyde, joined the U.S. Army at Fort Hayes in Columbus, and Marine served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. On January 29, 1945, tragedy struck the Hamm family when Joes wife Pauline, perished in a fire in Joe and Paulines home. Pauline was buried at Weaver Cemetery. In the spring of 1946, Marine Hamm assumed the duties of custodian at the Bloomdale School, when his father-in-law, who was also my grandfather, retired after 42 years of service. On November 16, 1946, Marine and Clara became parents of a son, Gary Richard Hamm. Little Gary lived only two short days, and he was buried at Weaver Cemetery. Joe Hamm retired from the B&O Railroad, and four years later, on April 2, 1969, Joseph Hamm passed away, and was buried next to Pauline at Weaver Cemetery. Marine and Clara were on a weekend excursion with Bill and Hazel Baird in Gallia County, when on August 3, 1969, Marine suffered a fatal heart attack in his motel room. Maurice Marine Hamm died less than a mile from where he had been born 54 years earlier. He was buried next to Gary at Weaver Cemetery. Mattie A. Hamm, wife of Jenkins Davis Hamm, died October 22, 1975, near Dayton, Ohio, and was buried next to her husband at Weaver Cemetery. Some years later, on August 6, 2003, Clara E. Hamm passed away at the Good Shepard Nursing Facility in Fostoria, Ohio. Clara was buried with Marine and Gary at Weaver Cemetery. The Hamm family was just one of many Gallia County families, that came to live in the Bloomdale area. In doing so, those Gallia County natives, also left many, many memories of Bloomdale, Ohio.
