HAND TARGETING is a trained behavior in which a dog touches its nose to the palm of your hand. This training exercise can be especially useful for rescue dogs (who may be shy or fearful of being touched) because it allows you to direct a dog’s movement and position with little or no physical contact. Additionally, you can refocus a dog’s attention when distracted or fearful. It can also be used to counter-condition a dog that is fearful of having hands reached out toward it, allowing you to introduce the dog to new friends more easily. Hand targeting can be taught quickly and requires no equipment! For a demonstration of hand targeting, watch this video which features Project Rusty advisor, Carolyn Grob, and Red Collar Rescue adoptables, Landry and Alise.
