HANDING/TAKING OVER-An exercise in Management. 1.OC Rear of an infantry battalion(Bn) is an onerous responsibility. A regimental Bn was handing over to a Garhwal Rifles Bn after a taxing three years in Nagaland. The OC rear and the 2IC of the incoming Bn were course mates. Things were progressing well, till one day Hav Tara Singh, the MT Havaldar reported to the O C Rear: > Tara: Saab jee eh tan apanu taang karaqn gay; koi tarpaulin accept naki karday kahnday nay is tay cut laga hai.( Sir, these guys will trouble us. They are not accepting tarpaulins even with a minor cut). >OCR: Koi gal nahi Tara Singh main inhan day 2 IC Saab nal gal karan ga( Donot worry i shall speak to their 2IC). 2. A week later a harassed Hav Tara Singh reported back and suggested a way out: > Tara: Saabjee ehnanu sabak sakhauna paina, Tusi mainu Do case Rum day dayo main dekhda eh gadiayan kida nahi landay( we will have to teach them a lesson. Sir, you give me two cases of Rum and i will see how they do not take over the MT). The needful having been done,Tara Singh had most MT seats, tools and Tarpaulins condemned by the Workshop. Next he got the Ordnance to deposit salvage and register fresh demands. all executed by the Two cases of Rum, without actual move of stores. 3. After having done the needful, Hav Tara Singh stripped all vehicles of the tarpaulins and as he started stripping the seats, panic struck the incoming unit. How were they going to operate without seats and tarpaulins. Hav Tara Singh triumphantly told his counter part of the incoming unit: Hun tusi apnay Officers nu Kambalan tay bitauna tay jawana nu Chhatriya day dena, kyun kay meein shuru ho janay nay. Tusi pehlon sadiyan demands cancel kawayo gay atay fir apniyan demands dayo gay tadtak barishyan khatam ho jangiyan. Hun aish karo ( Now you can seat your officers on blanket stuffed seats and give umbrellas to the Jawans as monsoons will soon arrive. First you will have to cancel the demands we have placed with the ordnance, then place your demands by the time this happens the monsoons will be over, Good luck to you ). 4. As the message was driven home, the MT was handed over within the next 24 hours along with the seats and Tarpaulins that had now become surplus. At times the likes of Tara Singh are required to drive home a point. All is well that ends well!!
