HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHIROPRACTIC The practice of chiropractic dates back to September 18, 1895. Today chiropractic celebrates its 118th birthday. I have been in practice for 27 of those years. Daniel David Palmer founded the Chiropractic profession in Davenport, Iowa on September 18, 1895. Dr. Palmer’s first patient was Harvey Lillard, who had a back injury in 1878 at the forth thoracic spinal level and had gone deaf at that time. Dr. Palmer thought that there was a correlation between that back injury and Mr. Lillard’s deafness. After two spinal adjustments, Mr. Lillard’s hearing came back. Dr. Palmer thought he had found the cure to deafness, but he never restored anyone else’s hearing. Dr. Palmer did however help a number of deaf people with other health issues and started to treat the general public. Many medical professionals said that it was impossible to cure deafness by spinal adjustments, since hearing is not controlled by the spinal nerves. It took about 100 years to prove that there is indeed a neurological connection between thoracic chain ganglia and the acoustic nerve. In 1897, Dr. Palmer started the Palmer School of Chiropractic, which is still in existence today and is one of the most prominent chiropractic colleges in the nation. Spinal manipulation can be traced all the way back to the beginning of recorded time. Writings from China and Greece as far back as 2700 B.C., mention spinal manipulation to ease low back pain. Hippocrates, the Greek physician, who lived from 460 to 357 B.C., also published texts detailing the importance of spinal manipulation. In one of his writings he declared, "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases". . Throughout the twentieth century, doctors of chiropractic gained legal recognition in all fifty states. A continuing recognition and respect for the chiropractic profession in the United States has led to growing support for chiropractic care all over the world. It was illegal to practice chiropractic medicine in New Jersey prior to 1953. Doctors of chiropractic have become pioneers in the field of non-invasive care promoting science-based approaches to a variety of ailments. Chiropractors must complete five academic years at an accredited chiropractic college. The complete curriculum includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and a clinical internship. Doctors of chiropractic must also pass the national board exam and all exams required by their state. Doctors of chiropractic work with the body’s ability to heal itself, paying attention to spinal biomechanics and its effects on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems. A Doctor of chiropractic is one who is involved in the treatment and prevention of disease, as well as the promotion of public health, and a wellness approach to patient healthcare.
