HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEAD BELLY!!! 1888-1949 If it werent for his music I dont know if Id be making mine today. When I was a timid lonely kid up in New Hampshire I would take Lead Belly records out of the Concord Public Library. I was probably 7 years old. I would listen to him sing and play the 12-string guitar and I could picture Lead Belly in my house, playing in my kitchen. And I could picture myself right there with him! When I was 8 my mother gave me her old Airline 6 string guitar. She had never learned how to play it but when it landed in my lap I was ready. The first song I learned was Swing Low Sweet Chariot because thats a song that Lead Belly played. When I started trying to play rock and roll music as a teenager I wanted the bass strings of my electric guitar to sound like Lead Belly riffs (what a pipe dream that was!) and when I started making family music, Lead Bellys approach - a mix of old and new songs from a variety of places played in whatever personal style a person might develop, all sounding like a late night parlor party - was the template. It still is. Thank you Lead Belly for a lifetime of inspiration! https://youtube/watch?v=SfU_ou9Fixw
