HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO CUB KODA! Born Michael Koda on October 1st 1948 in Detroit, Michigan. He was a singer, guitarist, songwriter, disc jockey, music critic and record compiler. Best known for his time as frontman with Brownsville Station and writing the song, Smokin In The Boys Room which peaked at No3 in 1974 and was covered by Mötley Crüe. He co-wrote and edited the All Music-Guide To The Blues, and Blues For Dummies and put together the CD of blues classics that accompanied the latter. He also wrote liner notes for numerous groups albums. He learned drums at age 5 and by the time he was in high school he had formed his first group. In 1969 he formed Brownsville Station in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a group influenced by the music of Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, The Who, Jerry Lee Lewis and Link Wray. In 1973 they released their only hit, Smokin In The Boys Room, a song that has sold over 3 million copies. After they broke up in 1979 Koda recorded solo albums of the blues and wrote a music column for numerous magazines, most notably The Vinyl Junkie for Goldmine Magazine and DJed. He also wrote for the acclaimed Blues Masters Series and contributed to the All Music website and books. On June 30th 2000, while promoting his new album, he became ill while recovering from kidney disease and died the next day.
