HAPPY DEPENDENCE DAY!! With Independence day upon us, I find myself thinking about the word independence. Who is independent? Let’s check it out… According to Webster’s dictionary (cough, cough – thanks to wikipedia, it’s been gathering dust lol), independence means: 1. not influenced or controlled by others in matters of opinion. Wow, that’s hilarious! One could argue that he/she is not controlled by another’s opinion but you we are most certainly influenced by someone else’s opinion, ‘cause duh! that’s partly how you come to form your own. 2. not subject to another’s authority or jurisdiction. What?!! Aaah.. I only have two words – Uncle Sam 3. not influenced by the thought or action of others. Hmmm, possibly?? Hands up if you’ve never gone to see a movie because someone told you it’s awesoooooome!! 4. not depending or contingent upon something else for existence or operation. Yeah, okay… 5. not relying on others for aid or support. Nope, never been helped in my life! I had no idea the dictionary was such a comic book. LOL. Independence is looking like a myth right about now. Not a single one of us are independent by these definitions. Even the most reclusive person one can imagine is dependent on something or someone. In the most basic example, every human being is dependent on oxygen. Let’s suck that oxygen out of the air and see how we do, shall we? Now, look at a successful celebrity. On the surface, they have great wealth and independence. But let’s all stop going to the movies, stop buying music and stop watching television. It wouldn’t take very long for that celebrity to turn into the recluse sitting at home, depending on oxygen. We are all dependent. Even Miss Independent depends on her car to start in the morning so she can get to work where her boss (she hopes) will pay her so that the bank (she hopes) can process her check. Happy Dependence Day Everybody!! Hahaaa!!
