HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYBODY (huge wave of comments about paganism and real Christian hit me like a ton of bricks and hits face first into a wall) Ok.....Ill talk about it. You know Easter and Christmas have pagan origins. Heres a bit of a history lesson while I recover.. Easter: The origins of Easter are rooted in European traditions. The name Easter comes from a pagan figure called Eastre (or Eostre) who was celebrated as the goddess of spring by the Saxons of Northern Europe. A festival called Eastre was held during the spring equinox by these people to honor her. The goddess Eastre’s earthly symbol was the rabbit, which was also known as a symbol of fertility. Christmas: At that time, Roman culture already celebrated a holiday on December 25: Saturnalia, the winter solstice. This tradition honored Saturn, the god of agriculture, and was celebrated with merriment, feasting, and gift giving. When Rome eventually instituted Christianity as the state religion in the fourth century the Roman church converted Saturnalia to a Christian holiday in order to commemorate Jesus’ birth. Christians have celebrated it as such ever since. Halloween: Samhain (Sawen), farmers brought livestock in from summer pastures and people gathered to build shelters for winter. People burned fruits, vegetables, grain, and possibly animals as offerings to the gods. It was a time when people thought the barriers between the natural world and the supernatural were broken. The Celts believed that the dead could walk among the living at this time. Scholars believe that Halloweens association with ghosts, food, and fortunetelling began with these pagan customs more than 2,000 years ago. So can we still celebrate God and Jesus on these days. Let me first off start were not perfect none of us are not even the church back then was. If you are convicted about celebrating then dont worry I got some ideas. If you arent I still have some ideas. I celebrate God everyday and heres some ideas; Easter: I call it Resurrection day go ahead go to church learn about Jesus life and death and resurrection, eat candy, have a feast like Passover. Christmas: You can still give gifts, you can still receive gifts, you can still celebrate Jesus. Thats all fine. Halloween: I call it Harvest day. Have a harvest festival like Sukkot, eat candy and food, worship, tell others about God. Be careful what you expose yourself to. Watch nightmare before Christmas and Corpse bride. Okay that last one may just be me its a tradition. But you get idea dont feel deprived from the fun because youre not. Remember Jesus is the greatest gift/ piece of candy than any trick or treat score. These are just some ideas of mine stay safe today and focus on the cross. -TonY
