HAPPY TULSI JAYANTI.......JAI SHRI RAM. Today is Tulasidas jayanti! Tulasidas was born on the auspicious day of Shravan shukla ( bright fortnight ) saptami, in the middle of the sixteenth century A.D. He was born to a brahmin family in Banda district of Uttar Pradesh. Tulasidas was married at a young age to Ratnavali. The story goes that Tulasidas was extremely attached to his wife and was unable to bear separation from her when she once went to her father’s house for a visit. He therefore went to see his wife stealthily in the middle of the night. Her father’s house was across the river, and it was a stormy night, so no boatman was willing to take Tulasidas across. In his desperation to meet his wife, Tulasidas used a piece of log to cross the river. On reaching there, he found a rope hanging from the second floor of the house, and used it to climb into his wife’s bedroom. Ratnavali was shocked to find her husband coming to meet her in the middle of such stormy night. She asked him how he had come, and Tulasidas told her about the log and rope. When she peeped out of the window, she dicovered that the log was actually a floating corpse, and the rope was a snake that had been climbing the wall !! हाड़ माँस को देह मम, तापर जितनी प्रीति। तिसु आधो जो राम प्रति, अवसि मिटिहि भवभीति।। Ratnavali rebuked Tulasidas saying she was only a bag of flesh and bones, and if he had a similar or even a half level of attachment for Lord Ram, he would have crossed the ocean of maya and attained devotion! Stung by her words, Tulasidas left his wife and become ascetic. Tulasidas is the famous writer of the Ramcharitmanas, the Hindi Ramayan. He wrote several other works of great religious significance. Of these, the Hanuman Chalisa is especially popular. In Puran, Lord Shiv narrates to Parvati how Valmiki received a boon from Hanuman to enable him to sing the glories of Lord Ram in Kaliyug. It is believed that Tulasidas thus came to fulfill the prophecy.
