HE WAS CONCEIVED BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND BORN OF THE VIRGIN MARY. Jesus was the Son of God but he was born like any other human being. His mother was a young woman called Mary. Lukes Gospel tells us how the angel Gabriel was sent to Mary to tell her that she would have a child, and that the child would be the Messiah, the one who would save Israel. Matthews Gospel tells us the same story but with a slightly different slant. We are told how Mary was betrothed to a man called Joseph but before they were married she was found to be pregnant. He was about to divorce her when an angel appeared to him and told him that Marys child was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Why did God choose to save humanity in this way? Why choose Mary? Why choose to appear in such a way? Be conceiving a child in this way, Mary became vulnerable to gossip and rash judgement. For some reason God chose to begin and end his life on earth in tension and pain. He was born in a stable and he died an outcast on the cross.
