It is the goal of OIS to prepare students for their future in a global community and to graduate lifelong learners who are ethical, competent, culturally aware and self-reliant. We expect our graduates to possess sufficient skills to enrich their own lives and the lives of others. OIS was founded 22 years ago and is situated in the northern suburbs of Osaka in an excellent, purpose-built facility. The school is supervised by a non-profit educational foundation. OIS is a unique educational institution in Japan and possibly in the world. It shares the school campus with a private Japanese middle and high school with the aim to be deeply involved in the relationship between the culture of Japan and the surrounding cultures of Asia and the rest of the world. The schools represent a common ground between Japanese and non-Japanese ideas, practices, beliefs and traditions. One of the school’s goals is to demonstrate new ideas, techniques, practices and systems to other schools in Japan and around the world. The school is at a particularly exciting stage in its history having moved , with a merger three years ago, under the umbrella of a large educational foundation. The school currently has an enrollment of approximately 250, representing over 30 nationalities, with over 40 dedicated faculty and administration. OIS is an IB World School offering the PYP, MYP and Diploma programmes, and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Post criteria Essential post criteria A masters degree in education with an emphasis on administration At least five years experience as a school administrator Experience as an administrator of an IB school Required post criteria Previous successful teaching experience Experience in supervision of curriculum Ability to embrace, articulate and model mission, vision, and student learning results of the school and of the wider Kwansei Gakuin foundation Ability to articulate and develop the benefits of our two-school model Demonstrated ability to promote quality teaching and learning in a positive school climate Demonstrated ability to engage faculty in the improvement of instruction and professional development Strong organization, time management, communication and listening skills, and ability to work collaboratively with the whole school community Other desirable criteria Development experience, especially in building programs to positively impact enrolment and working with the community on capital fundraising and contributions Experience in a three programme IB school Understanding of the “educational foundation” as it relates to Japan Japanese language ability The position The head of school will provide a clear focal point working closely with: principals, coordinators, and faculty; the administration of its partner Senri International School; the campus supervisor and the governing foundation’s chancellor; and will maintain a strong working relationship with parents, students and the wider school community. Policy defines that the position will be appointed by the Board of Trustees based upon recommendation from a Board appointed committee. Foundation, campus and school responsibilities The head of OIS will: Serve as a member of the Foundation Council Serve on the Executive Committee which manages the overall operation of the Senri Campus Serve on the Academic Planning Meeting which coordinates educational operations of the Senri Campus Oversee the ongoing evaluation process for the school, reporting both internally to the foundation’s evaluation committee and externally to accrediting organisations Serve as a member on the admissions committee for all students applying to OIS Work in partnership with the Executive Committee to promote the learning outcomes, the school and foundation’s mission and articulate these to students, faculty, staff, parents and the wider community Keep the Executive Committee informed of the nature of the educational system within OIS Ensure there is a written plan for educational, financial, facility and governance objectives within OIS, and to oversee and implement this development plan School program The head of OIS will: Oversee the shaping of the school’s educational program and the quality of life in the school community Oversee the development and implementation of the OIS K-12 plan for curriculum in line with the educational philosophy of the IB programmes Direct the overall professional development program for OIS teachers in conjunction with the principals Cooperate with the SIS head and the technology director to ensure the effective use of technology at OIS and SIS Relationship with Senri International School The head of OIS will: Develop a working relationship with the head of school of Senri International School (SIS) Work with the SIS head of school to ensure efficient resource use and planning across the entire organization Oversee, with the SIS head of school, the policies governing Type I and II contracts, hiring, activities and other common concerns of the shared program, including library, and technology matters Personnel The head of OIS will: Establish an effective manner of leadership and involve members of the administration and faculty in decision-making, where appropriate Attract, retain and develop excellent teachers and administrators who are directly responsible for the successful learning of students Oversee and evaluate the work of the OIS counselor, IB coordinators, OIS librarian, and OIS business manager Act as the reporting point within the governance structure for the elementary school principal and the middle and high school principal; secure their assistance in formulating school objectives, plans and programs; and evaluate their performance Meet with faculty and appropriate personnel, as necessary, to address matters concerning the improvement and welfare of the school. Manage personnel situations relating to leave, tragedies, family celebrations and similar concerns Counsel faculty in matters particular to career development and overseas teaching positions Community Relationships The head of OIS will: Work with the campus supervisor to establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with other schools and campuses within the Kwansei Gakuin foundation Communicate on a regular basis with the community through the Educator newsletter, email and other appropriate media Be directly responsible for news releases and other items of public interest or need which pertain to education matters, policies, school related incidents or events. Establish and maintain a working relationship with the Parent Advisory Council and the Parent-Teacher Association Act as the final point of arbitration between administrators, faculty, parents and students International school relationships The head of OIS will: Establish and maintain contact with the Japan Council of International Schools Establish and maintain contact with the East Asian Regional Council of Overseas Schools Oversee the Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation and the review process of the International Baccalaureate Organization for all three programmes Attend meetings of the Association of International Schools in Asia (AISA) athletics and activites’ group of schools and represent the concerns of OIS and SIS, a duty shared with the SIS head Budget The head of OIS will: Work in cooperation with the foundation towards agreed fiscal targets Oversee the budget planning process as it pertains to Osaka International School Work with the head of SIS to effectively plan for the use of available resources for the continued improvement of the educational programmes of the campus Advancement The head of OIS will: Endeavour to attract a diverse international student body and achieve full enrollment of the school Maintain contacts with consulates, key businesses and business associations that have an interest in the school Promote and market the school by raising the public profile of the school Cooperate with the foundation’s efforts to attract financial contributions to the school Supervise the school alumni liaison program Supervise the public relations program of OIS Salary and benefits Highly competitive base salary Administrative allowance Overseas living allowance based on family make-up Annual home leave (from the second year of contract) Education provision for dependent children of school age Medical insurance for all eligible family members Retirement supplement Relocation flight, shipping allowance (on hiring and at termination of contract) Applications Please apply through the online application form being sure to address the essential post criteria listed above directly in the online form.
