HEADING FOR THE MOON. Good morning all salts and saltessers. A quick little story with the pic. This day we had been trying to fish over a patch of rugged ground, stones, rocks on the seabed. I could see the fish were there sitting tight on this ground but we could not keep our gear in tact. Each time we tried we came up with a split net, big mending jobs. At the end of the day we had to climb out with our tail between our legs, two busted nets on the deck and one new one to rig. Luckily the weather was calm and a full moon shining, all hands were busy with this task. Our auto pilot had packed in earlier in the trip so it was hand steering; we had a deckie learner that had not mastered the compass yet (box the compass) and did not understand degrees, never the less I called him to the bridge, his name was Alan. Now Al do you think you can steer this ark for half an hour while I nip on the deck to help the lads? Well Ill try skip but you know I am no good with the compass! Dont worry lad Ill set the radar proximity alarm, so if any vessel comes within two miles of you the alarm will go off and Ill be straight back on the bridge. You dont need to know the compass, the moon is sitting right on the stem (a full moon just above the horizon) just keep heading for the moon. I watched him for a bit as he diligently kept the ship, heading for the moon. Shout out of the window if you need me Al I then nipped out of the shed and onto the deck. About twenty minutes later Alan shouted me from the bridge. Ive passed the moon skipper, which way do I go now? I shot back to the bridge and sure enough we were going in the opposite direction to the course I left him on, the moon was astern of us! I said, ok Alan youve done a good job, by the way whats your fathers name? Its Alan same as me skip, well when you see him you tell him, he only made it to the moon but you passed it! You what skip, dont understand?Never mind lad nip and get us a nice cuppa. Have you guessed this young chaps name? Alan Bean Its true I kid you not x
