In the dreadful march of the telegram boy down suburban streets, and in the faces of the waiting women, the fear and sorrow is made real. The exceptional dramatisations of the wonderful letters home by Major General Harold Pompey Elliott, and the extraordinary diary of nurse Kit McNaughton, present an almost visceral interpretation of the war experience. Clever splicing of battlefield re-enactments with archival footage of the same actions reinforces the sombre sense of history. How Australians responded to the abject horror and futility of their first world war is most fascinating. Overall, this is a rich and enlightening re-telling of a familiar story, of which much apparently remains to be told.
