HEADS UP SC...MASSIVE DRILL GOING ON !!!! Georgetown County emergency responders and officials will join their counterparts in Horry County as well as state and federal agencies Saturday as part of Operation Coastal Response 2014. The exercise, based on the scenario that a plane crashes on approach to Myrtle Beach International Airport, will concentrate around Wacca Wache Marina and Sandy Island in Georgetown County and the Bucksport Marina in Horry County. A staging area will be set up at Waccamaw Middle School for the National Guard helicopters. The story line says that the plane goes off the radar over water, which is why the majority of the action is expected to take place at the marinas and the island. The full-scale exercise is designed to train and assess Georgetown and Horry counties’ ability to respond to a mass casualty/fatality incident and to coordinate and integrate multi-agency and multidiscipline assets from local, state and federal agencies that would likely provide support and assistance in a large scale incident. Volunteers will play the parts of victims. Participating agencies include Georgetown County Emergency Management, Georgetown County Fire/EMS, Georgetown Sheriff’s Office, Georgetown County School District, Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Department, Midway Fire Rescue, U.S. Coast Guard, S.C. Army National Guard, S.C. Emergency Management, S.C. Department of Health & Environmental Control, the American Red Cross, Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Conway Hospital, Georgetown Memorial Hospital, Waccamaw Community Hospital, McLeod Loris Hospital, and McLeod Seacoast Hospital, Myrtle Beach International Airport, Horry County Emergency Management, Horry County Police, Horry County Fire/Rescue, Horry County E911 Dispatch, Horry County Sheriff’s Office, Horry County Coroner’s Office, Horry County Public Works, Horry County Public Information and Horry County Communications. The public will see an influx of public safety and military vehicles and personnel in and around the marinas as well as military helicopters on Friday and Saturday. The exercise will not affect the public’s day-to-day operations and access in those locations.
