HEADS UP if you are heading to Central Texas for the 2013 Republic Of Texas Biker Rally. Keep the rubber side down. This just in from the Austin Police Department: The Austin Police Department, along with other area law enforcement agencies, will conduct an Arrive Alive Central Texas traffic safety initiative for the Republic of Texas (R.O.T.) Bike Rally. It will run from 9 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2013 to 5 a.m. Sunday, June 16, 2013. During the 2012 R.O.T. Rally weekend, 175 crashes occurred in Austin, resulting in five deaths (three of which included motorcycle fatalities) and 95 minor injuries. During the same operational period, 104 people were arrested for DWI. APD is focused on saving lives on the streets and highways of Austin and making Austin roadways safe for everyone through education and enforcement. The R.O.T. Rally traffic safety event is the second in a series of initiatives for Arrive Alive Central Texas. Over the past year, Austin and its area communities have experienced a sharp increase in the number of traffic related fatalities. Preliminary statistics for 2012 compared to 2011 show a 47 percent increase in the number of deaths of motorists and pedestrians. Some of the most significant factors contributing to these preventable deaths include driver/pedestrian impairment, excessive speed and aggressive driving. In an effort to reduce this upward trend, the leaders of 15 area law enforcement agencies met and formed Arrive Alive Central Texas, a collaborative work group dedicated toward combining enforcement efforts to affect long term, positive solutions aimed at changing the culture or hazardous driving behavior in our community, making the greater Austin area a safer place to live and visit.
