HEALTH SERVICES DEPARTMENT USMANU DANFODIYO UNIVERSITY, SOKOTO A YELLOW LIGHT FOR CAUTION ON EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE . This is one of the world’s most deadly diseases, 9out of 10 people that catch the disease die as a result of it. The current epidemic started as a handful of cases in Guinea, spread to neighboring Sierra Leone and Liberia, now it’s in Lagos, thus it is important for everyone to be armed with information on how to prevent the disease. Early Symptoms of Ebola Virus Disease are sudden onset fever, weakness, muscle aches, headaches and sore throat some patients may develop rash, red eye, hiccups, chest pain and difficulty breathing/swallowing, these early symptoms may progress to vomiting, diarrhea, impaired kidney/ liver function and internal or external bleeding. Ebola Virus spreads between human beings through contact with skin and body fluids (blood, saliva, semen) of infected persons or people who have died from Ebola; you can NOT get Ebola Virus from water, food or air. Currently there is no drug that is commercially available for the treatment of Ebola Virus Disease. No vaccine is available for the disease. Routine cleaning, particularly routine and regular hand washing and disinfection with hypochlorite (bleach) is effective in killing the virus. In addition, people should avoid contact with wild animals particularly bats and monkeys. All animal products should be cooked properly before consumption.
