HEARTSPRING A horde of starlings descended today filling the trees around our home and blackening large patches of lawn as their contentious cacophony shattered the air with its brittle ringing. They moved as a restless, undisciplined mob, squabbling over whatever it is that starlings seek in the grass, milling about and taking off en masse. I could not pick out a leader; perhaps the first to react to some imagined threat became by default the guide in their mindless flight. Starlings must certainly fulfill some important role in the grand scheme of things; but I prefer robins, harbingers of spring: independent contractors, self-directed workers, precise and efficient on the job, but not beyond pausing occasionally to share an exuberant song of pure joy. The coming of robins coincides with the longer days and milder temperatures that will soon awaken the earth, and it’s the robins that announce heartspring.
