HELP! Borzoi owners & breeders: Zena is a 12 year old female rescue with me since 2006. She developed kidney disease summer 2013 and has been doing OK with the help of Azodyl, Epakitan and 450 ml fluids every other day. Her days include a brief walk, mostly standing outside & enjoying fresh air & sunshine, eating a little – some days gobbling food, and being with her brother & sister. As her care giver I’m managing OK except for nights. She has a cycle of thirst, drink, urinate that is very intense and only happens at night – Sunday night from midnight to 6 AM for example. So we spend most nights getting up and down drinking and urinating. Compounding the problem is she cannot get up without assistance. Zena is very stressed until the thirst urge passes, usually around sunrise. Then she sleeps & has as good of a day as could be expected from a senior dog. I have 2 questions: 1) Has anyone ever experienced a cycle where intense thirst sets in only at night and if so, how did you manage? 2) Fluids don’t seems to make any difference. Sometimes the night thirst is greatest on her fluids day. My vet says fluids work more effectively on cats than dogs. Do fluids really help dogs with kidney disease?
