HELP! HELP! HELP! Dear Friends, Relatives, Brothers and Sisters For the Past three/four days I was under dilemma, thinking what steps I should take after visiting two more homes in my Endeavour of #RiceBucketChallenge…….. After much consideration, I am seeking help from all of you in solving my emotional turmoil which has been troubling me after meeting the residents of those two OLD AGE HOMEs. As decided by our team, we at #PLENUMGROUPS started out to take up #RiceBucketChallenge in two different places. It was a pleasant beginning for six of us Vir Bhadra Yumnam, Amar Chowdhury, Chaoba Wang, Gatu Lai and Sanatoba Sharma and me, stuffing two bags of rice with some cereals and veggies. It was a lovely ride to our 1st destination………. OLD AGE HOME at Nongpok Kackching around 30 kms from Imphal, Manipur on the way to Etham Moirangpurel (Thoubal Dam Project site) which is run by RUSA as the signboard tells. The Home is on top of a hillock with a scenic surrounding of natural beauty. On approaching the home, we had a very warm welcome by our surprise struck hosts. On explaining our purpose of visit, they were more than happy. It happens to be a rare occasion to have visitors who are willing to share something with them. Their poor condition of survival not only touches our hearts but also filled with the feeling of hatred to those who led them stay in such pathetic conditions in their last stage of life. Their only consolation was the (almost regular) supply of tea and breakfast from the 30 Assam Riffles post, situated not far from the home. The 10 old people (8 aged females 1 old & sick man and a mentally retarded boy) who stayed there seem to have cut off from the main land for ages and their only connection was one so called Mr. Mani (we never had the courage to ask who and what this person was) whose return was eagerly awaited which might give them a chance to taste some different food apart from the daily BOILs or DAL (few grains in a drum of water)……. As their sad story continues, they said they have not tasted any good food for quite some time and wish to have “FISH CURRY and LAPHU EROMBA” at least once before their journey to the heavenly abode…….. There were no officials or any caretaker to look after. They were left alone to struggle to survive through the next day…….. With a much heavy heart we continue our Endeavour to another Old age home our 2nd destination…… OLD AGE HOME at Langjing Achouba and there we encountered a much different story…….. My dear friends, it is sometimes really hard to predict what you will encounter in life because we human are born so different and we rule our own personal space in a particular way. Once entered into someone’s space, you experience a different aura. Around 20 women (in much better condition) stay in this home run by GEETA KONTHOUJAM, a social worker and Dr. MAYENGBAM KAMALA, a Physiotherapist by profession. The only thing we notice similar is the shabby place they stay but the overall condition much better. Thanks to Miss Geeta and Dr. Kamala for their unconditional service and thousands of SALUTE from the whole team of PLENUM GROUPS. This home was started by the duo around October 2010 by putting in every penny they accumulated and buying a piece of land at Langjing Achouba. On 2nd November 2011, Dr. Meina honorable MP of Manipur recognizing their effort laid a foundation stone with a promise of constructing a 3 storey building from his MP fund but the story ends there. Till date there is no assistance from neither the MP nor the Govt. or from anyone. The Duo is running the home from the mare income by running a physiotherapy clinic at Konung mamang under the name “Kangla Accupressure, alternative therapy treatment, Research and training centre”. The duo told us that, they have sacrificed everything and even sold their gold ornaments and mortgaged some of their ancestral property to meet the needs of the home. Now much of their resources have lapsed they are left with no choice but to shut down the place if didn’t arrive anytime sooner. So, dear friends if at all anyone of you wants to help, pliz come forward and let’s make this world a better place for ourselves and others…….
