HELP NAME #SUNDERLANDS NEW SQUARE! Work is well underway to realign St Mary’s Way and create a tree-lined boulevard along the former Vaux Brewery site. This work is part of the preparation for the Vaux site’s future use as a central business district, as it’s vital that there are more people working within the city centre to enable it to be more vibrant and prosperous. This whole regeneration scheme will change how the city centre looks and feels, providing an improved entrance to the city centre for vehicles, a pedestrian super-crossing and space for a new public square in the heart of the city centre. The design, materials and artworks within this new square celebrate Sunderland’s proud industrial heritage, particularly its world-class shipbuilding prowess. Naming the new square The new square in Sunderland City Centre will be an important landmark for this and future generations; a celebration of the city’s industrial heritage and the foundation for its future aspirations and plans. A meeting place for friends, a location for events and festivals, the new square will be somewhere for Sunderland people to be proud of and a space to welcome visitors to our city. We need to decide what this new space will be called…. We have come up with a shortlist of suggested names and invite you to tell us which name you prefer by 30 July, or if you have a suggestion you are welcome to add this too. The agreed name will be announced in early autumn 2014 and the square will officially open towards the end of 2014.
