HELP US HELP THIS YOUNG MAN: This is a drive being held by one of fellow NPOs that we work closely with. I have said that we will step in and try and help. So if you can help in any way please do: (Bank details at the bottom). **** was born with dwarfism, a condition that causes him not to grow as expected. Before ****, we did not know much about how difficult things can be for our Little People. Apart from the obvious challenges of finding clothes to wear that fit and not being able to do all things taller people can do, there has also been several operations in the past which **** needed. For instance, we never realised how ones lungs and breathing can be affected if the chest does not grow enough for the lungs to expand properly. We also did not realise that the pair of custom made school shoes he needs for high school next year costs R3000, which they cannot afford. In spite of his many challenges, **** is an attractive and happy young man, which is an example to all of us, considering the pain and discomfort his condition must cause. Even simple tasks we take for granted, such as sitting or lying down and getting up can be challenging. **** is now 14 years old and is going to high school next year. He attends a standard public school, which is important for him and his parents, which have always treated him, and also expect others to treat him, as they would any other person. He works hard and does well at school. Now **** needs an operation urgently (according to his doctors, his last operation) to correct problems in this spine which are causing him to loose feeling in his legs and he will no longer be able to walk if he does not have the operation soon. The medical aid pays only a portion of the costs involved, leaving about R28 900, which is simply not available for this family. This includes R6 500 for the operation (Dr Etienne Coetzee), R19 800 for the custom prosthesis and R2 600 for the custom back cast (excluding R3000 for a pair of shoes and any rehabilitation treatment for post operative care). This complicated and challenging operation needs several specialists (orthopaedic surgeon, neurosurgeon, vascular surgeon, anaesthetist, ...) to participate. **** operation has been scheduled for 29 November 2013. It would be so wonderful if Angels Without Wings can provide assistance for **** to be operated on urgently. His little body is now ready for this operation, which cannot be postponed for long. In order for **** to go to his new (high) school without the back brace that he would be required to wear for about 8-12 weeks after the operation (he would not be able to sit and does not want to be too different when going to the new school), he needs to get the operation very soon.
