HELPING YOUNG DREAMS TAKE WINGS Arrived in Leh this morning from Mumbai. It was an amazing crowd of roughly 3,000 young people and their parents last night at the VEDH Career conference in Thane near Mumbai. As I mentioned earlier VEDH is a very unique form of career counseling where famous Psychiatrist Dr. Anand Nadkarni and his huge team of volunteers organize an annual event for youth, with a live on-stage chat show featuring ‘achievers’ who have done something unusual and off the beaten track in their lives. The other speaker with me last night was…Mr. Vivek Sawant who was in the team that built India’s first Supercomputer PARAM. At Pune VEDH last week one of the co-speakers was Abhilash Tomy the Navy man who sailed around the world alone in a sailboat in 150 days. Other guests in the past years have included the likes of Aamir Khan (actor), Dhanraj Pilley (Hockey star), Anil Kakodkar (chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India), Dr. Jayant Naralikar (renowned Indian astrophysicist). The Maharashtra youth are lucky to have a programme like this and I wish such exposure was available to more people in their formative years. What is so good is that these events are attended by the youth and their parents. So many young dreams are often unknowingly killed by none other than our own parents… with all good intentions. Luckily I could resist family pressures... to drop mechanical engineering for civil, although I had to walk out of home for this and had to fend for myself and my engineering education at the age of 18… well more on this story another time. Any volunteers to replicate this in Ladakh! After all we are lucky to have so many star personalities visiting us each summer.
