HER LAST MILE (for NYC’s carriage horses) Faith snapped by burning lies Lashed by wild freezing winds Then blasted by the sun Etched shadows beneath eyes How she’d love to go run Beneath a clear blue sky The cold snow’s now begun She can’t take any more Like the way she used to Not young but still able So she picks herself up And crawls from the stable Down the long twisted road Where the sky’s always dark Where poisonous snakes slide Through the muck and the fog and drive right by her side Spewing toxicant smog And her tears have long dried And have turned into sand She’s too long on this road Now her heart never smiles As she takes one more load She knows it’s her last mile Copyright December, 2014 Dennis John Ferado My first book, “Time On Hand” can be ordered on Amazon or Barnes & Noble or through my publisher: soulasylumpoetry Book collects 80 songs & poems 2 short stories and 16 vintage photographs.
