HERE COMES THE DREAMER Pastor Sam Adeyemi | Genesis 37:18-20 “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” – Eleanor Roosevelt. Everyone has challenges, whether financial, emotional, physical, relational, educational etc. No one lives a perfect life. The difference is how you respond to the challenges of life. In the face of adversity, some develop wings, others go for crutches. Some people use their “handicaps” as crutches, that is, what to lean on as an excuse for not realising their potentials; while others look within themselves and leverage on the power of imagination to create new levels for themselves. That was the case of Joseph, the eleventh son of his father and his favourite child. He had ten older brothers harassing him daily but in the realm of his imagination he was above all the harassment and had a dream (Genesis 37: 3-5). Even as a slave in Potiphar’s house, Joseph was described as a prosperous man (Genesis 39:1-2 KJV). In spite of the different degrading circumstances he found himself, he worked with excellence and did not allow his identity to be defined by the label others placed on him. He never let go of his dream. Without a dream, you are sunk. Our dreams of today are the raw materials which the Holy Spirit uses to construct our future realities. Joseph did not allow the physical circumstances to extinguish his dreams even though his brothers hated him the more when he told them his dreams (Genesis 37: 5-9). You have got to have a dream! A dream from God will alter your sense of identity; it will redefine who you are and give you a new self-image. When you have a dream, you know that the current circumstances are temporary and you do not see yourself as a victim. A dream will define your destination and direction in life (Luke 12:34). You cannot make real progress without defining your destination. Once your destination is defined, every road cannot take you there. A dream gives you hope and motivation; you have a reason to wake up every morning. You have a reason for living. Once hope is completely extinguished from people’s lives, they give up on life and some even commit suicide. A dream will discipline you and control your behaviour. When you see yourself in leadership, you do not engage in certain activities because you know they will impact negatively on your future position. If you want to see your dreams come into existence, write them down (Habakkuk 2:1-2). A dream is unreal. It is a spiritual reality. Writing is the first opportunity that your dream has to make contact with the physical world. Without writing, you make very little progress. Declare your dream. Say it out. Words are seeds (Hebrews 11:3). However, be careful who you share your dreams with because some people are dream killers. Develop your character. You need strong values to fulfil a dream. Prioritise your activities. Focus your resources on specific areas to achieve your goals. Categorise and develop your gifts – the God-given attributes which add value to your world. Joseph had leadership and management skills along with his ability to interpret dreams. A dream will preserve your life. Serve faithfully and maximise every opportunity. Start small; think big. God is always involved in your life.
