HERE. THERE AND EVERY WHERE...365 children were killed in Florida by domestic abuse in the first ten months of 20l3. It is a national tragedy, I am sure. We are supposed to love children. When did we start hating children, start killing children?.. There is a happy, new trend that started in Texas. You pull up at a Texas fast-food store, give your order over an intercom and when you go to pay for your order, the clerk tells you that your food bill was paid by the strangers in the car just ahead of you. This kind custom is spreading all over the U.S. Fast food chains claim it is happening two or three times every day in some areas. It is a Quid pro quo sort of thing. A stranger, one thinks, paid for my fast food order, and now I will reciprocate by paying a food bill for another stranger...I no longer go out to brunch 7 mornings a week because my kidney doctor has put me on a strict diet, but when I did go out every morning for brunch and wore my usual captains hat, quite a few strangers paid for my food bill. I understand this, too, is being done every day in restaurants all over the country where complete strangers pay restaurant bills for soldiers or veterans...There is a new kind of theft in America today. We have crooks posing as truckers of well known trucking companies. They bid for trucking jobs by offering to pick up shipments at less cost than competitors. They pull up with a truck that is identical to the trucks of the legitimate, well known trucking company, pick up the shipment and take off with it and the shipment is gone forever, stolen. Here is a recount of just a few of the thefts. 80,000 pounds of walnuts worth $300,000 in California, $200,000 worth of Muenster cheese in Wisconsin, $80,000 worth of rib eye steaks in Texas, 80,000 pounds of king crab worth $400,000. in Ohio. Last year carriers reported nearly l,200 cargo thefts of all kinds nation-wide, about the same amount of thefts as the previous year. It is estimated that trucking thieves are stealing over 2l5 million dollars of cargo a year. When one thinks of 30,000 Americans being shot and killed by guns every year, when one thinks of all the ways thieves in America rob stores, banks etc., when one thinks of the millions crooks rob by stealing identifications and filing fraudulent income taxes, robbing over 300 million dollars of years, when one thinks of all the doctors, HMOs etc. who rob BILLIONS by filing fraudulent medical claims, it is getting more difficult, almost impossible, to say, I am proud to be an American. What in the hell do we have to be proud of?.. I remember the American of my youth, 70 years ago. We didnt have all these gun killings, truck cargo thefts, all these holdups of stores, banks, etc., all these fraudulent income tax filings, all these fraudulent medical claims, where Republican and Democrat congressmen worked together to pass laws that made all Americans prosper. That is the America I loved. That is the America that deserved to be loved. That is the American I was proud of, that was the America that one could die for, and the country that my brother Tony gave his life for in World II, and I fought the Japanese in this war in Burma for. That country is gone forever. It will not get better. It will get worse. God help us all. God bless us all.
