HERE is the choreographic line-up for Dance Motif 2015! To participate in a dance, you must be a full year, registered member of Orchesis and attend the choreographers presentations on Monday, September 22, at 8:10 PM in Studio E-19, Faculty of PER in the Van Vliet Centre at the U of A. This years show features Guest Choreographers Peggy Baker and Brian Webb, both of whom danced with Orchesis in the 1970s! Guest choreographers made possible in part by a grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts PEGGY BAKER is acclaimed as one of the most outstanding and influential contemporary dancers of her generation. A founding member of Dancemakers, she toured internationally as a member of Lar Lubovitch’s celebrated New York company throughout the eighties, and joined Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris for the inaugural season of their White Oak Dance Project, subsequently forging important creative relationships with Paul-André Fortier (Montreal), James Kudelka (Toronto), and Doug Varone (New York). She established Peggy Baker Dance Projects in 1990, and for the first 18 years she dedicated herself to solo performance, winning praise for the eloquence and depth of her dancing, and accolades for her collaborative partnerships with extraordinary musicians and designers. Since 2009 her choreography has focused on works for small ensemble. Over its 24-year history Peggy Baker Dance Projects has been presented at major festivals and dance centres in North America, Asia and Europe. Among her many awards are the Order of Canada, The Governor General’s Award, the Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Walter Carsen Prize and honorary doctorates from the University of Calgary and York. A master teacher, Ms. Baker is Artist-in-Residence at Canada’s National Ballet school. In the early 1970s, Peggy danced with the universitys Orchesis Dance Group. Peggys rehearsals: Saturday October 25, 12:30 - 6:30, Sunday October 26, 11:00- 2:00, Monday through Thursday, October 27 - 30, 8:10 - 10 PM, Friday October 31, 6:00 - 10:00 PM, Saturday, November 1, 12:30 - 6 PM. Maintenance rehearsals: Tuesdays 8:10 - 10PM thereafter. BRIAN WEBB, a dance artist and choreographer – shares his creative insight with Orchesis once again. Brian is from Edmonton, Alberta and also danced for Orchesis Dance Group in the early 1970’s. He choreographed for the Orchesis 40th anniversary in 2005. Brian Webb, a graduate of the U of A with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre, danced with Eric Hawkins and with the Carol Conway Company in New York. He formed the Brian Webb Dance Company as “company in residence” at Grant MacEwan College, where he was the Chair of the Dance Program for ten years. Since the beginning, the BWDC has been dedicated to experimentation, the new, and a collaborative creative process. Brian has a keen interest in working with artists from other media and believes in collaboration being the democratic exchange between individuals to make something new.
