HEREWARD THE WAKE Long before the story of Robin Hood came about, a very REAL outlaw of Anglo-Danish descent figured prominently as a hero figure for the subdued English after 1066. Largely ignored in the modern accounts of history, this figure commanded respect even from Duke William, the conqueror of Angle Land.
