HEY DARJEELING!! JOIN HANDS TO TRANSFORM HIGH SCHOOL GROUND “I wondered why somebody didnt do something. Then I realized, I am somebody.” - nknown Taking the above saying to their heart, good folks from Dhobitalau area which is home to the only proper PLAY GROUND in Darjeeling town – the High School Ground – realized that if they didn’t do something about the abominable condition in which the school ground currently stands, then soon the only proper playing ground in all of Darjeeling town could be forever lost. With this thought, people – be they young or old, men or women have joined hands and have started an amazing initiative aimed at transforming the school ground to not only making it better, but also making it one of the best grounds in Darjeeling. Corresponding with TheDC one of the main organizers writes, “This is an initiative from the people and players around Dhobi Talaw, we feel it [the need to protect and transform High School Ground] because we grew up here.” Currently they are seeking help to get an excavator down to the ground, so that they can remove the filth, get rid of all the construction materials that have been dumped there, and cut the ground to make it larger, and level the ground so that water from nearby nali and johras do not enter the ground. The organizer writes, “There is a lot that needs to be done... but leveling the ground is the our 1st priority. Kids need to play properly, more than that it’s a public place... a park, a place of sanctity... We need it.... We don’t have levelled ground in Darjeeling like they do in the rest of the world ‘a flat land to play’ so yes we need to fix it, clean it and love it.” Indeed we do, the organizers add, “Its rather strange that in Darjeeling which was once full of parks and walkways, today we can’t even find proper place to breathe... and what’s more hurtful is the fact that no one in power has done anything to rectify the situation...” Enough is enough!! As Darjeelingey’s it is our responsibility to come together, and join hands to help and assist the people of Dhobi Talau region in transforming the High School Ground. If we do not stand together on this issue, there is no hope that someone else will come and do so for us. Please join this initiative by: a) If you know someone higher up in GTA who could spare an excavator – please get this message passed on to her/him and help to get an excavator down to the High School Ground. b) Volunteer your labour hours, and help physically to make the transformation happen. c) Volunteer to buy equipments etc needed to level the ground and make it better d) Volunteer to provide food, snacks and drink to those who are volunteering physically – Alu-Dum Puree and Chya is in much demand e) Donate cash to help with the efforts. f) Show your solidarity by joining their facebook page: https://facebook/dighighschoolground so that you can stay connected with the progress this project makes, and Most important of all, please spread the word by sharing this news, so that it reaches all the ears of our politicians in power.
