HI Gwen Happy birthday Gwen Newton. I like history, for we all are a part of human history. Race, class, economics, bias , power and yes politics will greatly determine what is remembered, archived and recorded. I love politics and there was time in New Haven when there were very few Black Alderpeople. Thanks to Gwen and others, that is no longer the case. In 1969, Gwen Newton was part of a winning team known as the Magnificent Seven who were elected to the Board of Aldermen on a ticket with Hank Parker in his first of his two runs for mayor. Parker, who later became the state treasurer, was the first Democratic black candidate for mayor, although he was proceeded by Raymond H. Paige, also black, who ran an independent campaign for that office 1963. Parker never became mayor, but the seven aldermanic candidates who were on his ticket won their races. Newton was one of six African-Americans who took her seat on the board as part of the Parker team and the only woman.
