HICCUPS We medically call it Synchronus Diaphragmatic Flutter (SDF). There is a membrane inside your body that separates your chest from the abdomen. It is called diaphragm. Hiccups occur when this diaphragm voluntarily contracts, resulting in the hiccup sound. It is a reflex action, and one has no control over it. They are not serious and usually last only a few minutes. But you can use these remedies: *Hold your breath for about 10 seconds *Breathe repeatedly into a paper bag. *Drink a glass of slightly cold water However if hiccups last more that 48 hours, it is a situation of conern. It is a sign of any of the following: -Decreased kidney function -Infection -Cancer -Defect of the nervous system such as nerve injury, stroke, meningitis etc -Mental health problem -Electrolyte imbalance You need to see a doctor to have the underlying cause identified and treated.
