*HIGH FIRE DANGER* Due to the unusually early warm and dry conditions, JBER Fire and Emergency Services in coordination with the Anchorage Fire Department officials have issued a warning to the public to be especially careful with fire. These weather conditions create challenges for firefighters by rendering the vegetation in south central Alaska in a highly flammable condition. Outdoor fires (burn pits and campfires) outside of developed campgrounds are prohibited until further notice. Exceptions are covered gas, electric, and charcoal barbecue grills, fish smokers and portable fireplaces with screened chimneys which can be used as long as they are carefully monitored. All burn permits on JBER are suspended. The important thing is to never leave any source of heat or fire unattended for any length of time. Weather forecasters predict the high fire danger conditions to persist through next week. Conditions are already challenging because of the quickly melting snow pack this year and lack of new growth in our vegetation (known as green-up). It has been a number of years since Alaskans have seen this level of fire danger this early in the year. These conditions could lead to increasing fire danger levels that would necessitate even more stringent measures. We could be facing a challenging summer ahead that will require everyones cooperation to avert major fires in both the JBER and Anchorage municipality areas. Questions concerning the burn ban restrictions may be directed to the JBER Fire Prevention Office at 552-2620. A link to the current conditions can be found atop the Fire Prevention SharePoint at: https://jbere.eim.elmendorf.af.mil/sites/fireprevention/default.aspx Please report fires immediately by calling 911.
