HIGHER LEVEL OF POLITICS OR. DOUBLE STANDARDS ? In a new turn of politics, today BJP is being held accountable for what it said or did in the past even as an opposition party ; by the same people who werent half as critical against the past rulers. Deviations from acceptable norms by BJP leaders attracts more media attention, and criticism; than by leaders of other parties. There always have been two sets of standards : one for BJP and one for other parties. BJP is scrutinised against tougher standards, and appraised less favourably compared to others. It is true that BJP prides itself for being a party with a difference , and sets very high standards for itself. But its application is more for the partys internal evaluation and self appraisal. When media and independent analysts conduct the scrutiny, and apply two different sets of standards, they appear to be biased and partisan. It can be argued that the stricter standards now being applied against BJP are not double standards but a new set of standards to which all parties should confirm , for raising the level of politics and for improving the quality of public life. Such a theory would be more credible if the new set of standards are applied stringently on all parties.
