HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Fight Club (David Fincher 1999) Based on the novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club is a darkly comic psychological drama directed by David Fincher and starring Edward Norton, Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter. Edward Norton plays an alienated insomniac, who hates his job and suffers from depression. Unsatisfied with life, he puts all his energy in creating the perfect apartment and goes to various support groups pretending to be a victim, which gives him a sense of release. Its there that he meets Marla Singer (Bonham Carter), a woman whos doing the same thing, and the two agree not to go to the same meetings together. Then one night on his way home from a business trip, he meets Tyler Durden (Pitt), a peculiar soap salesman who has a real problem with consumerism. Later, when an explosion destroys his apartment, Norton calls Durden and moves in with him. As the two become closer, Durden challenges him to a fight and the release he experiences from the brawl makes Norton feel more alive than he has for a long time. As they keep fighting on a regular basis, a crowd starts to form around them and more men join in, leading to the creation of Fight Club, which becomes a sensation and proliferates around the country. But when Tyler starts organizing the the various Fight Clubs into a revolutionary organization and starts seeing Marla, who Norton had his heart set on, things start getting truly out of control. A great script with exciting set pieces and a classic twist, stunning cinematography, editing and effects, a killer soundtrack by the Dust Brothers and spot-on performances by both Edward Norton and Brad Pitt as well as the rest of the cast (including a hilarious appearance by Meat Loaf) all make Fight Club a unique cinematic experience, which was heavily debated upon its release and not all that successful. Its unapologetic look at manhood and violence received much criticism and the film one of the most controversial Hollywood films of its time but over the years it gained a widespread following and has become a genuine cult classic. https://youtube/watch?v=SUXWAEX2jlg
