HILLSIDE HELPS: “God is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in trouble.” (PS 46:1) The forty sixth Psalm gives to all of us a sure Word in our unsure world. When we consider the every changing and unstable conditions of nature we pause, at least for a moment, and wonder what is going on. It is cold when should be hot, wet when it should be dry, and dark when it should be light. There seems to be an increase in the case of huge natural disasters around the world. There are earthquakes of some magnitude all across the world almost daily. There are floods on one side of the globe, while droughts are present on the other side of the globe. Tornadoes and hurricanes appear to be on the increase. In addition there are so many nations that are unstable, including our own. We have a failing economy, out of touch leadership, and the continuous threat of God hating terrorists. Billy Graham once described our society. He said that it looks like the crazy people have escaped form the institutions and have locked up all the doctors. This world is out of the control of man, but I want to remind you that it is in the control of Almighty God. He sees and knows what’s going on, not only in our world, but in the whole universe. The Psalmist reminds believers, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Well, friend this world is in trouble. Our troubles didn’t just start. The world has been troubled by the effects of sin for all generations. I do believe that evil is on the increase as God said it would be before the church will be raptured. We are not told when exactly that will occur, but none the less, it will happen with suddenness and catch most of the world by surprise. What we must do is learn to trust God no matter what kind of troubles may come. We must believe that “God is”. He is present, powerful, and stands ready to meet the needs of His people. He is the Savior of all who will come to Him. He will forgive and forget all our sins. He will protect us through all kinds of dangers such as earthquakes, floods, and fires. We cannot live in fear, but must live by faith, for it is impossible to please Him without faith. Today, you don’t have to be afraid. God is ever present with you, no matter what you are going through. He will not ever leave you nor forsake you. He is your stronghold and safe place in the storms of life. (Bro.
