HIM PROFESSION: 2014 IN RETROSPECT, 2015 IN PROSPECT There is no doubt that the year 2014 was an eventful year for HIM professionals. 2014 brought some key development to our profession. What are some of these key developments? Firstly, on 28th Feb.2014 HND in Health Information Management was finally included into the Scheme of Service of the Federation for national recognition following the 38th National Council on Establishment (NCE) held at Ilorin, Kwara State. Secondly, In 2014 HIM profession experience huge success rate among candidates who sat forFeb/Nov. HIM professional License Exams - not less than 90% success. Thirdly, August 2014 HIMAN/HRORBN hosted the first International Conference of Health Information Managers held @ Lagos regardless of the Ebola scourge that would have halted the conference. Also, in October 2014, HIM profession got new Educational Curriculum. A curriculum developed by the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN) in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Health, International Agency and NBTE to enable HIM professional move with the current HIM Practices in the globe. Another memorable event was on 27th Nov. 2014 when Nigeria witness the first Induction ceremony forqualified HIM professionals - first in the history of HIM profession and Nigeria at large. MY EXPECTATIONS IN 2015 However, before I proceed, let me welcome you to 2015 by saying, HAPPY NEW YEAR ! 2014 has come and gone. We are now in 2015, a new era with many expectations - a year where many are looking forward to seeing new things in HIM profession. As forme, am highly optimistic. In this 2015 I expect there should be massive employment forHIM graduates. Candidly speaking the high rate of unemployment among HIM professionals is alarming. I there fore Implore the Board and Association to find solution to this problem and find a way of providing employment to our graduates. Let them stop saying, HIM is the back bone of medical practice when 70% of HIM graduates are jobless. Let them stop saying, Information is power when the power source is not available. Also, in 2015 and beyond, I want Health Records Board and our Association to see the need why the should intensify effort to include our Profession into the list of Paramedical profession that often undergo one year compulsory internship scheme with pay. More also, I wish to see our long awaiting BSc HIM come to reality in this 2015. Finally, in this 2015, I wish to see many HIM professional upgrading their skills/ knowledge in all ramifications. Once Again, I wish you a happy new year! Till we meet again in my next article.
