HINDUISM UNDER ATTACK IN WEST BENGAL: NEPALESE OF DARJEELING - PART I THE very foundation stone of Hinduism under attack in West Bengal by reportedly Government of West Bengal under chief minister Mamata Banerjee with active co-operation and promotion from a section of Nepalese of Darjeeling. More than 1,000 years ago Hinduism entered Nepal, based on rigid caste system, and made the Hindu foundation; consequently at present more than 80% people of the Nepalese community embraced Hinduism. Now, this Nepalese community is facing a crucial challenge to keep its purity of Hinduism in West Bengal due to greedy approach by a section of derailed Nepalese of Darjeeling. West Bengal government with its ugly face attacked the Hindu base of the Nepalese community to destroy the very vital spirit of this community which is a crime against humanity. To understand the real danger thrown to Hinduism, consider the following example – former chief minister Bhuddhadev Bhattacherya is a Bengali and belongs to Hindu Brahmin family and highest cast in Hindu caste structure. Similarly present chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a Bengali and belongs to Hindu Brahmin family. Now, Government of West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee has sent proposal to Government of India that Brahmins of Bengalese community is to be declared as Scheduled Tribe like Santal, Oraon, Nagesia, Mahil, Savar Gond Ho etc. Now place this example on Nepalese community. Government of West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee reportedly has sent proposal to Government of India that Kshatriya [Chhetri] caste people of Nepalese, who are wearing sacred thread, is to be declared as Scheduled Tribe i.e. to be declared as Adivasi. This heinous move of the Government of West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee as chief minister, is a shame to Indians. On 26th February, 2014, Bimal Gurung, the chief of the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha [GJM] of the people of concocted race Gorkha, posted in his Face Book wall as – The GJM has always demand ST status for the 10 Gorkhas Communities namely Rai, Yakha, Gurung, Bhujel, Newar, Jogi, Sunwar, Mukhia, Mangar, Khas and Thami. I am happy that State Cabinet has recommended the above communities for the approval of ST Status. I would now appeal to the Central Government to expedite this issue and grant them the St Status as soon as possible. Centre must take steps to grant Schedule Tribe Status to all Gorkha communities, except those belonging to the Schedule Caste.” In this statement he earmarked 11 castes and ethnic/tribal groups of Nepalese community. To hide the real picture, he mentioned ‘Khas’ instead of Chhetris who are Kshatriyas of Nepalese community belong to Paharia/Parbatiya/hill Group; their mother tongue is Nepali; at the beginning name was Khaskura/Parbatiya/Pahariya and thereafter Gorkhali and now Nepali. There are four groups in Nepalese community. Subject matter of this article is limited to ‘Khas’ people who are known as Chhetris, the Kshatriyas who wear the sacred thread, belong to second highest caste in Hindu caste structure below the hill-Brahmin i.e. Bahun. In India, Indigenous people means ethnic/tribal group which Indians called as Adivasi. United Nations announced the necessary properties to recognize as Indigenous people, which are as – indigenous knowledge, past-present and future manifestations of their culture, tradition, integrity as distinct people, identity, customs, dress, archaeological-historical-cultural sites, artefacts, ceremonies, language, literature, intellectual-religious-spiritual holdings, traditional medicines etc. All people’s contribution to the diversity and richness of civilization and cultures constitute the common heritage of humankind. United Nations affirms that indigenous people, in the exercise of their rights, should be free from discrimination of any kind. United Nations recognized that respect for indigenous knowledge, cultures and traditional practices contributes to sustainable and equitable development and proper management of the environment. It is the fact that Indigenous people i.e. ethnic/tribal people cannot be created. The reader of this article you will find that none of the groups of Darjeeling as mentioned above by Bimal Gurung, the leader of the people of false and fictitious race Gorkha, is able to comply the properties announced by United Nations. If you take the case of Lepchas, the aboriginal people of Darjeeling, you will find the properties highlighted by United Nations. In plain land, you will find these properties inside the Santals, Oraons etc, ethnic/tribal group i.e. Adivasis. Article 11(1) of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, 2007 says: “Indigenous peoples have the right to practise and revitalize their cultural traditions and customs. This includes the right to maintain, protect and develop the past, present and future manifestations of their cultures, such as archaeological and historical sites, artefacts, designs, ceremonies, technologies and visual and performing arts and literature.” Dipak De [Human Rights activist; M.
