HISTORICAL PARRALLELS OF JFK AND PARNELL. Although their political careers are separated by eight decades there are striking similarities-that have brought their careers into focus at the Parnell Summer School. Charles Stewart Parnell and John Fitzgerald Kennedy had familial roots that proved critical to their respective self images and to their careers. For example in 1880 Parnell addrdessed the US Congress on Irish freedom and in 1963 JFK quoted Parnell "no people believed more deeply in the cause of Irish people than the Americans" Parnell was known at the time as the "uncrowned king of Ireland" and in 1891 died of a suspected heart attack at gthe age of 45. Kennedy who led to a successful campaign for the Presidency in 1960 making him at 43 the youngest candidate ever elected to the White House was slain by an assassin in 1963. (Robert Schmuhl is professor of American studies at University of Notre Dame . He will deliver the keynote address at the Parnell Summer School on August 11th)
