HISTORIICAL DATE: NICARAGUA 1979 On this date 35 years ago, the Nicaraguan people, under the valiant leadership of the Sandinista Front for National Liberation (FSLN) took the reins of power in their country, culminating a long, bitter 23-year struggle against the long-established and entrenched US-supported Somoza family dynasty dictatorship that kept Nicaragua poor and dependent on US imperialism. Having achieved victory, the Nicaraguans established what became an exemplary social revolutionary experiment, one recognized and admired around the world. The revolution was momentarily interrupted and sidetracked in 1990 after suffering a long decade of violence visited upon it and the Nicaraguan people by the United States, with the support of the latters ally Israel. But the revolution resumed in 2006 when the Sandinista party regained control of the country in that years national elections. In memory of Philip Agee, former CIA officer-turned CIA critic and adversary, internationalist social revolutionary, and beneficiary of and contributor to the Nicaraguan social revolution (July 19, 1935-January 7, 2008).
