HISTORY, FILM, and PSYCHOLOGY ________ . . . . . . . . . . .Saw an interview on TV yesterday with the author of a new biography of famed filmmaker of the thirties and forties. (It Happened One Night, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,, etc.) In the discussion of what he did during WW2, they mentioned his instructional and informational films for the government. They showed in its entirety this film which was fascinating on many levels. , , , ,At this particular viewing (think Id seen it before), what struck me this time was the very strict rules and simplified, for emphasis, rationale for the occupying army to remain in role. These rules, seemingly harsh (but this was within months after the end of war, when wariness was the watchword), can be reviewed at the section between 10:16 and 11:35. THIS IS NOT a post about Nazism, and most definitely not about the modern nation or people of Germany. Much of the historical background is tendentious if not merely propagandistic. My interest is in its psychology, history, and as part of the oeuvre of Capra. U.S. National Archives
